Water in short supply in southwest Texas

Marcos Carley checks the water level of his portable tote as he and his wife purchase non-potable water from the Terlingua Ranch property owners association. Carley said he and his wife have to fill up their tote with nonpotable water every couple of weeks and must purchase drinking water from either Terlingua or Alpine, the latter being a nearly three-hour round trip.

Out in the near desert-like region of Big Bend, Texas, water has become a cherished necessity.

Witness the Terlingua Ranch Lodge, a 200,000 acre ranch about 70 miles from Big Bend National Park, where drinking water is for sale.

But water availability will become even tighter next month as the board that directs and controls the lodge and ranch has decided to reduce the amount of nondrinking water for sale reports the Texas Tribune.
