Coal train derailment leaves I-25 closed near Pueblo, Colorado

Authorities investigate the aftermath of a train derailment near mile marker 107 on Northbound I-25 north of Pueblo on Oct. 16, 2023. The highway likely will be shut down for several days- and potentially longer- after 30 cars derailed north of Pueblo, collapsing a rail bridge over the highway highway, state and federal officials said on Monday. It could be days or even weeks before Interstate 25 near Pueblo, Colorado is fully open following a weekend coal train derailment that tumbled off an overpass and onto a semi-truck, killing the driver.

Federal investigators were on the site Monday, probing the derailment and the collapse of the 65-year old bridge. The crash killed a 60-year old truck driver who was passing under the overpass at the time of the derailment. Reports indicated I-25 in both directions could remain closed for longer than a week.

It could also take up to two years for investigators with the Naitonal Transportation Safety Board to complete their probe and release a final cause for the Sunday accident. The crash site cannot be cleaned up and the Interstate reopened until investigators conclude their on-site inspection.
