BNSF says it can handle more crude-by-rail shipments if Dakota pipeline is shut

BNSF railway already carries crude oil through Oklahoma but the company now says it is ready to handle any increased load if, and that’s a big ‘if’, the Dakota Access oil pipeline is shut down by the courts.

Reuters reported the company, considered the railroad unit of Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. gave the indication in recent days as the ongoing legal dispute could lead to a closure of the line.

The line, led by Energy Transfer LP carries around 570,000 barrels of oil a day but last year a federal judge tossed a key permit and ordered the Army Corps of Engineers to conduct another environmental review of the line.
