Put Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt among most of the nation’s governors fighting a plan by the Air Force to transfer Air National Guard units with space missions into the active-duty Space Force, a move that would effectively remove state authority over those units.

He and governors of 47 other states as well as five U.S. territories are against the plan and sent their objections recently to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. The only governors who did not sign the letter were Ron DeSantis of Florida and Greg Abbott of Texas.

“Governors must maintain full authority as commanders in chief of these assets to effectively protect operational readiness and America’s communities,” stated the letter, promoted by the National Governors Association.

“Legislation that sidesteps, eliminates or otherwise reduces governors’ authority within their states and territories undermines longstanding partnerships, precedence, military readiness and operational efficacy.”
