Western Oklahoma visited by more tornadoes

Cordell Damage

Oklahoma was plagued by more tornadoes Tuesday evening, just days after nearly 25 tornadoes ravaged the state and left four people dead and the cities of Marietta and Sulphur with severe damage and destruction.

The western city of Cordell was struck by one of the Tuesday tornadoes, but no one was injured. It was one of five reported tornadoes in western and southwestern Oklahoma. The largest was reported late Tuesday evening near Hollister but at last word, there were no significant damages reported.

Most of the damage in the city of about 2,900 residents was on the southeast side. The tornado path stretched from the south side of the city to the north and resulted in extensive damage to several homes.

KOCO 5 news reported that April Brown saw the tornado as she drove into the city.

“I just screamed and I turned the other way because I was like, ‘Get away from it.’ So, we took another way around,” April Brown, whose family lives in Cordell, said.

Cordell Mayor Phil Kliewer said the storm path was similar to a 2001 tornado that hit the city in Washita County.

“This one kind of did some weird things and ended up north. But the other one, the damage path down through here and the south part of town was pretty much the same,” Kliewer said.

Towns and rural areas hit by the Saturday night tornadoes are slowly getting power restored. The Oklahoma Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives reported its largest outages remain in Atoka, Bryan, Carter, and Hughes counties where the storm damage was the heaviest.

But with the Tuesday night tornadoes, rural cooperatives reported 127 customers were without electricity in Tillman County.

Oklahoma Gas and Electric reported late Tuesday that most of the nearly 25,000 who originally lost power Saturday night have seen their electricity restored. The utility reported that 225 customers were without power.

An assessment of damage showed 350 broken utlity poles along with 500 cross arms, 75 transformers and more than 60,000 feet or more than 11 miles of overhead line had to be replaced.
