The ups and downs of trading for Oklahoma energy companies

The roller-coaster ride taken by Oklahoma oil and gas companies in the past several years is obvious when a deeper dive is taken into the values of their shares.

Some have risen from 95-cents per share to $25 while others saw their values plunge from $121 to $46.

Oklahoma City-based Chesapeake Energy has been trading at around $88 per share. In February of 2021, trading was at $42.51 per share while the company’s high was $107.31.

Devon Energy has been in the headlines this week on Seeking Alpha, a crowd-sourcing market analytical firm that was critical of the Oklahoma City company’s decline in recent months. Devon was trading around $46 this week but had been at nearly $66 a share in January.

In March of 2020, Devon traded at $8.70 a share and in May of 2008, its value was $121.38 per share. Gulfport Energy of Tulsa, one of the state’s oil and gas firms with the highest per-share trading value, traded for $125.03 on Monday then hit an all-time high of $125.35 on Tuesday. Its most recent low value was $60.80 in February of this year.

Helmerich & Payne, a long-time energy firm in Tulsa once had a value of $3.83 per share in 1983 but this week traded at $41.12 per share. Its high this year was $54.45.

Ovintiv Inc., the Colorado-based company with heavy drilling activity in Oklahoma’s STACK play, had a share value of $3.09 in 2020 but this week traded at $48.47. Its high in the past 52 weeks was $59.10 per share.

Another Tulsa-based company, Unit Corporation, traded at $53.35 per share this week. Its all-time high was $249.67 back in 2008 and in January 2021, trading fell to a low of $7.10 per share. Unit’s 52-week high was $66.75.

SandRidge Energy, while not trading at significantly high values, went from 95 cents in March of 2020 to $15.79 per share this week. Its trading high in the past year was $22.05.

Williams Cos. traded at $34.50 this week while its 52-week high was $35.46. Its low was in March 2023 when shares traded at $28.30. The company’s all-time high was $58.22 per share in July of 2014.
