One of the risks of solar power is mother nature, i.e. hail.
Just ask residents of Austin, Texas who learned the hard way when a thunderstorm dropped hail the size of golf balls last weekend.
KVUE TV in Austin reported the hail shattered rooftop solar panels on homes.
“We got them because we thought it would really help on the electric bill for sure, you know,” one home owner told the TV station. “Yeah, it works great.”
But now, he is having to assess the damage.
Lovelace said solar has had a big impact on his utility costs, but with this recent round of hail, his family is having to assess the damage.
The hail was so heavy it totaled cars, battered roos and heavily damaged solar panels on rooftops.
“I think all of those are damaged. You can’t see it. But if you get binoculars – I’ve got binoculars that they’re looking at and you can see the damage, and I think they’re all damaged,” said the homeowner looking at his solar panels reported KVUE.
It was reminiscent of the destruction of a commercial solar operation last spring near Scottsbluff, Nebraska.
Hail the size of baseballs destroyed the 5.2 megawatt solar project when a thunderstorm struck in June.
