Rig activity slipped in the US but grew in Oklahoma in last week

The nation’s oil and gas rig count slipped by one in the past week while drilling activity in Oklahoma continued its slow climb according to the most recent data from the Baker Hughes Co.

The latest rig count showed Oklahoma increased its numbers by one to reach a total of 59 active oil and gas rigs.

Nationally, the number fell by one to 727 but the count is still 268 more than a year ago when there were only 442 rigs active in the U.S. The most recent count showed the number of oil rigs declined nationally by two to 574 while the number of gas rigs gained one to 151.

A year ago, there were 359 oil rigs active in the U.S. and 98 gas rigs seeking new energy.

Oklahoma’s count of 59 compared to Texas where there was an increase of one to 358 rigs. New Mexico was unchanged at 98 and North Dakota continued with 36 rigs. Louisiana’s count fell by 3 to 61 rigs.

The Red Top Rig Report in Kansas stated the state’s drilling numbers grew by 3 to a total of 54 rigs.

Colorado stayed at 16. Ohio’s count was unchanged at 12 and Pennsylvania saw no change at 25 rigs. West Virginia continued with 14. Wyoming stayed at 16.

Rig count jumps seven in Midland County

The Permian Basin was the most active of the oil and gas plays with 342, a drop of one in the past week. The Ardmore Woodford saw no change with 2 active rigs and the Arkoma Woodford added one to reach four rigs. The Cana Woodford gained one to reach 28.

The Barnett continued with 4 rigs while the Eagle Ford added one to reach 66 rigs. The D-J Basin picked up one to reach 16 rigs. The Granite Wash dropped one to leave only two rigs in the play. The Haynesville fell by one to 69 and the Marcellus was unchanged at 39.

The count grew by one to leave 2 active rigs in the Mississippian. The Utica play stayed at 12 rigs and the Williston was unchanged at 38 rigs.
