Colorado launches ski train service in the mountains

Several pairs of skis and snowboards are stored upright inside an open baggage compartment of an Amtrak train.

While Oklahomans are focused on saving Amtrak’s Heartland Flyer in the wake of some concerns about its funding, Colorado is preparing to launch rail passenger service to ski towns and sites in the west and northwest mountains.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis signed a 25-year agreement this week with Union Pacific to resume passenger service from Denver to cities and communities in the mountains. The passenger service will replace freight trains which once ran 30 a day from coal production sites in the northwest. The Union Pacific approached the state about a partnership and the end result is a deal to include three daily roundtrips from Denver to the mountains, reported the Colorado Sun.
