While Supreme Court Justices are weighing a fight against a proposed oil train carrying crude from Utah’s Uinta Basin across Colorado and eventually to points such as Oklahoma’s Cushing Hub and refineries in Texas, Utah’s crude oil production reached records in 2024.
A recent University of Utah report showed Utah produced 65 million barrels of oil last year and it represented a 13% increase from 2023. The study by the University’s Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute and the Utah Geological Survey called it the “highest annual production on record.”
But it depends on whether Utah, the Ute Indian Tribe and industry groups get the support of the U.S. Supreme Court in development of the 88-mile Unita Basin railway that would link to a rain line in western Colorado…a link opposed by Colorado counties and the state as well.
