A 12,000-acre coal mine expansion by an electric utility was recently approved by the Texas Railroad Commission, even though local citizens, governments and experts opposed the decision.
The expansion was approved for San Miguel Electric Cooperative and Railroad Commissioner Jim Wright defended the decision, saying it was necessary to keep the state’s grid running.
