Iowa County to consider how to tax wind farms

A county in southeast Iowa is considering a new way to tax wind farms.

Washington County Commissioners will meet this week to decide if they want to require that wind farms be assessed at a rate depending on their age. Under the proposal, wind farms would see a 0% of the net acquisition cost in the first year but compounding 5% of the cost every year that follows.

By year seven, assessments would cap at 30%. But the plan has its opponents who contend it only puts out the welcome mat for more wind turbine operations.
