Wichita city leaders come out against Evergy’s rate hike plan

Wichita, Kansas City Council members took a firm stand this week against a proposed rate hike by the state’s major utility, Evergy.

A resolution opposing the rate hike was read Tuesday by Mayor Brandon Whipple as he detailed how the increase in electricity rates would strain the city, its residents and businesses.

The Kansas Corporation Commission has yet to vote on the rate hike that would increase rates by 9.77% or $14.24 more a month for an average residential customer. Evergy filed the request in April.

Wichita city leaders estimate if the hike is approved, it will increase their lighting and utilities costs by 8.3%. Their resolution in opposition will be filed with the KCC.
