A House Committee chaired by Oklahoma Congressman Frank Lucas plans to explore the nation’s fire weather prediction capabilities.

Rep. Lucas announced the Science, Space and Technology committee hearing will also assess collaborations between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and state and local officials and commercial partners in order to ensure the safety of lives and property.

One of the witnesses will be Mark Goeller, State Forester/Director Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry.

“Wildfires are a critical issue across our country and can pose devastating threats to our homes, businesses, and lives,” Chairman Lucas said.

“To support firefighters and fire management response officials, it is important they have the best tools and forecasting available to rapidly address, prevent, and mitigate wildfires. I look forward to learning more from our witnesses on current wildfire prediction capabilities and hearing their thoughts on what gaps need to be filled to improve and coordinate the available data.”
