Groundbreaking for Tesla’s lithium refinery in South Texas

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, left, sits with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott at a groundbreaking ceremony for the auto manufacturer's Robstown lithium refining facility on Monday.

Construction vehicles roared and beeped this week as Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott formally opened Tesla’s $375 million lithium refinery in south Texas.

It was seen as another effort by Musk to control more of the supply chain for the growing production of electric vehicles. The refinery is located in rural Nueces County and the first of its kind in North America reported the Corpus Christi Caller Times.

Construction is scheduled to be finished later this year, Musk said, and reach full capacity about a year afterward.
