New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham addresses the New Mexico Climate Summit, Oct. 25, 2021 in Santa Fe.

New Mexico’s Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham is apparently ready to turn her 2019 carbon emissions executive order into law in the coming months—and the oil and gas industry warns it’ll crush the state’s economy.

The governor wants the state to cut all carbon emissions from every sector by 2050. Republican legislators responded by claiming such a move would mean removing $2.6 billion from the state’s budget and could disrupt New Mexico’s economy and the nation’s energy supply.
