Congressman Markwayne Mullin highlighted the need for the Federal Communications Commission to study the impact edge providers have on rural broadband networks, consumer costs, and other general consumer impacts during a House Energy and Commerce Communications and Technology Subcommittee hearing on Wednesday.
Earlier this year, Mullin introduced H.R. 1650, which would create this study and examine the possibility of requiring edge providers to contribute to the FCC’s Universal Service Fund.
H.R. 1650, the Rural Broadband Network Study Act, would study the impact big streamers like Netflix, Hulu, and Disney + have on rural broadband network costs and availability. Specifically, this bill would require the FCC to launch a study into the current projected demands on rural broadband networks associated with services offered by edge providers.
