College study focuses on abandoned wells in Arkansas

A study of the more than 47,300 abandoned oil and gas wells in Arkansas, by Hendrix College in Conway says their nonuse is leaving billions of dollars on the table.

The team of college professors and students found that nearly 80% of the state’s abandoned wells could provide benefits that triple the cost it would take to restore the ecosystems.

The Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported the study also used information from energy software firm Enverus which studied more than 430,000 nonproducing oil and gas wells that occupy nearly 2 million acres.

More than 430,000 oil and gas wells across the country are nonproducing, according to energy software firm Enverus, when the nearly 2 million acres they occupy could provide benefits that triple the cost it would take to restore these ecosystems, according to the recently published work by the Hendrix team.
