Oil state Attorney General wants to undo Trump methane rules

New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas was among attorneys general for 20 states and the District of Columbia urging congressional leaders to undo the Trump administration’s loosening of limits on methane emissions from oil and gas facilities.

The Democratic Attorney General and others who signed the letter argued for the use of the Congressional Review Act to invalidate the regulation of the EPA that eliminated “important limits on air pollution from oil and gas facilities.”

They contend the rule is “legally flawed and would significantly increase pollution that harms our residents and natural resources.”

While New Mexico is one of the highest oil and gas producing states in the Country in its Permian Basin site, Balderas has been critical of the exploration.

Joining him in signing the letter was Phillip Weiser, Attorney General for Colorado and Tom Miller, Attorney General for Iowa.

The Congressional Review Act measure to reimpose the methane restrictions could get a vote this week.
