Despite Oil Price Drop, Most States See Increased Rig Counts

The latest Baker Hughes oil and gas rig count shows Oklahoma is unchanged with 208 active rigs in the past week. And despite the downturn in oil prices, many of the oil-producing states still saw an increase n their rig counts with the exception of New Mexico where there was a drop of four.



Oklahoma’s count of 208 rigs compared to 172 a year ago at this time. Nationally, the U.S. count dropped by four to 1,925 and saw a decline of four oil rigs to a total of 1,568 and an increase of 10 gas rigs to a total of 356. Compared to a year ago, the national count was up 171 from 1,754. The number of oil rigs in the past year increased by 185 while the number of gas rigs dropped nine.

Canada’s rig count also saw a drop, losing 19 from last week to a total of 410. Both oil and gas rig counts declined….oil down 12 and gas down 7.

But the Canadian count is still up 32 from last year at this time when there were 378 active oil and gas rigs.

Colorado is unchanged at 75 but five more than a year ago. Kansas saw an increase of two to a total of 28 which is three more than last year at this time. New Mexico dropped by four to 96 but 16 more than last year.

North Dakota is up one to 181 which is 18 more than a year ago. Texas saw an increase of 5 to 906 active rigs. Last year at this time, Texas had 834 active rigs.



Checking some of the major basins, the Ardmore Woodford has 5 active rigs, a drop of one in the past week and down 8 from a year ago. The Arkoma Woodford is at 6, an increase of one in the past week as well as one year earlier. The D-J Niobrara is up to 62, same as last week and eleven more than last year. The Eagle Ford dropped by 6 to 212, down 14 from a year ago.

The Mississippian dropped two to 76, only one more than a year ago. The Permian increased by 5 to 567, up 98 from last year.

The Williston increased by one to 193, 18 more than a year ago.
