Nearly six months after New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham announced a partnership with BorderPlex Digital Assets, LLC of Austin, Texas that she said will position New Mexico as a leader in digital infrastructure to power the technology of tomorrow, astounding information was revealed near El Paso, Texas this week.
A hard-to-believe figure of $165 billion will be invested to create a campus to house data centers in Santa Teresa, New Mexico, just outside of El Paso. Dona Ana County Commissioners listened to the new details, then voted 4-1 to move forward with what the company calls Project Jupiter, a project the company said will result in 750 permanent jobs and $300 million in direct payments to the county.
The site is an unincorporated area near West El Paso. Here’s how astounding the $165 billion figure is—all of the property in El Paso County is valued at nearly $95 billion. How incredible is $165 billion. Google announced recently it intended to spend $4 billion over the next two years in Oklahoma for an expansion of its data center in Pryor and construction of a new center in Stillwater. The New Mexico project is at least 41 times greater than what Google intends to spend in Oklahoma.
The original announcement was made in February but details of the amount of investments weren’t released until this week.
“This groundbreaking partnership further cements our reputation as a national leader in advanced manufacturing and global trade,” Gov. Lujan Grisham said six months ago. “By securing digital infrastructure today, New Mexico is investing in its economy to build a more prosperous tomorrow.”
“We firmly believe that the next wave of frontier tech belongs on the American frontier,” added Lanham Napier, Chairman of BorderPlex Digital Assets. “We’re thrilled to partner with Governor Lujan Grisham to build a Digital Infrastructure Campus in Santa Teresa.”
