Storms leave thousands without electricity in Oklahoma

Severe weather Tuesday night and Wednesday morning in Oklahoma left thousands without electric power.

At least six tornadoes were reported across the state and by Wednesday mid-morning, Oklahoma Gas and Electric reported 4,200 customers were still without power. Public Service Company had nearly 2,300 at the same time who lost electric service.

An update from OG&E indicated crews worked quickly overnight and by 10 a.m. Wednesday, 77% of the customers who initially lost electricity had it restored.

“Given the path of the storms overnight, OG&E teams are evaluating damage to the grid that could not be seen during the night. Crews made good progress restoring power overnight, and additional personnel are arriving today, Wednesday, June 18, from neighboring states to assist with restoration,” stated the utility in a morning notification. “In addition to personnel, materials like power poles, transformers, cable, and other equipment are needed to get our customers back up and running.”

With more storms in the forecast for late Wednesday, OG&E indicated it was moving materials and personnel into areas that could be impacted.

Public Service Company indicated most of the customers without power were in Bartlesville and Tulsa. Pawhuska had more than 600 customers without electrical power.
