A legal battle could develop out of the fight between the small eastern Oklahoma town of Arkoma and the city of Fort Smith, Arkansas.
Fort Smith provides utilities to the border town of Arkoma and recently proposed a nearly 226% rate hike for Arkoma residents. You can imagine the shock of the Oklahomans who live there. The two cities have been in talks ever since but Arkoma mayor Joshua Johnson is threatening to go to court if a compromise cannot be reached, and soon.
He’s hoping for a settlement to be reached this week. If not, it’s off to court.
“Our options will be to seek an injunction until we can put in an alternate solution, which may be redirecting that [wastewater] flow to another source or trying to build another facility. Those are all going to take years, with all of us sitting in court somewhere else.”
