Osage Mineral Council set to expand control

The Osage Minerals Council in Osage County is about to expand its authority over oil and gas and other energy-related industries.

The Council, part of the Osage Indian tribe is about to take over management of production, permitting and leasing of the Osage Mineral Estate. It would assume control  from the Department of the Interior. Tribal Principal Chief Geoffrey Standing Bear has been in negotiations with the Interior Department and indicated the assumption of self-governance functions could begin in the fiscal year 2026.

Osage County remains the only county in the state not under any regulations of the Oklahoma Corporation Commission because of previous treaties. The Commission has no oversight of the county.
