Construction costs on housing in Colorado could shoot up $25,000 to $35,000 if an Energy Code Board adopts recommendations this week requiring future homes to meet more energy efficient standards.

The Colorado Association of Home Builders warned that the requirement of electric stoves and heating systems will add high costs to new homes and only exacerbate the state’s housing affordability crisis.

The Energy Code Board was created by a 2023 law that required new homes to be able to accommodate solar panels and electric-vehicle charging.
