** Sunoco and Canada-based Parkland Corp. announced an agreement May 5 in which Sunoco will acquire all outstanding shares of Parkland for about US$9.1 billion (CA$12.56). The deal, which includes assumed debt, positions Sunoco for expanded operations across a larger service area.

** The European Union will present a roadmap plan on May 6 on how to wean itself off Russian energy, European Commission spokesperson Stefan de Keersmaecker said on Monday. The details of the plan will be presented on Tuesday in Strasbourg by Dan Jorgensen, EU Commissioner for Energy and Housing.

** As Europe accelerates its shift to solar energy to meet ambitious climate and energy security goals, a formidable new challenge is emerging from the skies: Saharan dust. According to research presented at the European Geosciences Union General Assembly 2025 (EGU25), mineral dust carried by winds from North Africa is not only reducing photovoltaic (PV) electricity generation across the continent but also making solar power output harder to predict.

** A record 117 gigawatts of wind power capacity was installed worldwide last year, slightly more than in 2023, but far less than needed to achieve goals to decarbonise energy, a report by the Global Wind Energy Council said.

** Bukit Asam, the Indonesian state-owned coal miner, is examining a plan that would invest $3.1 billion in a plant for converting coal into synthetic gas. Its chief executive announced this on Monday.
