Denver’s Suncor refinery hit with new long list of pollution violations

After making a $10.5 million settlement three years ago for pollution violations in Colorado, Suncor was hit this week with another round of violation claims by the EPA and Colorado regulators.

Suncor was named in a 140-page list of alleged new violations. They were drawn up by the EPA’s regional office and accused the refinery of releasing benzene and other toxins into the air and the water around the plant located in Commerce City.

The Colorado Sun reported the joint notice by the EPA regional office and state regulators is the first step in what may end up as the next round of fines and other penalties for Suncor, which has been the target of similar notices and subsequent negotiations in recent years.
