Nation’s radioactive waste dump is 25 years old

The 25th anniversary of the nation’s only underground site to hold radioactive waste was observed Tuesday in southern New Mexico.

It was near Carlsbad where federal officials gathered to mark the occasion. The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, built a half-mile deep in an ancient salt formation, has received 13,850 shipments from more than a dozen national laboratories and sites since 1999.

The Associated Press reports the anniversary was observed even as the state of New Mexico has publicly expressed concerns about the government plans t o repackage and ship some drums containing the same kind of nuclear waste that were the source of a radiation release in 2014.
