Early morning earthquake reported in west Texas and New Mexico

 

West Texas was rattled early Wednesday morning by a 5.3 magnitude earthquake.

The U.S. Geological Survey indicated the quake struck around 4:27 a.m. local time and was centered about 24 miles southwest of the town of Mentone, Texas. That’s roughly 60 miles southwest of Carlsbad, New Mexico.

The quake hit at a depth of 7.4 kilometers. It was felt by the National Weather Service office in Santa Teresa, New Mexico, about 215 miles west of Mentone.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
