Major train derailment in Moore prompts weekend cleanup

Cleanup of a 30-car train derailment that happened Friday night in Moore along Interstate 35 was underway over the weekend.

No one was injured and no hazardous materials were involved when the 106-car Burlington Northern Santa Fe train derailed at the intersection of Southwest 34th street in Moore. What caused the derailment remains under investigation, according to Moore Police Chief Todd Gibson.

“Our officers and fire responded. We contained the scene, immediately identified there were several cars derailed. It was quite a chaotic scene blocking traffic.”

Fire Chief Greg Herbster said responders were “very blessed that it’s not any worse than it is.”

No evacuations were necessary and the Fire Chief said no citizens were in danger. The only material that was exposed was dry bulk plastic that leaked at the scene.

“Nothing dangerous, nothing hazardous and we’ll continue to monitor the entire scene until we get it cleaned up,” added Chief Herbster.
