New Mexico governor vows a fight with the Biden administration

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham speaks at a news conference.

The Biden administration has a coming fight on its hands with Democratic New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grishm.

How much of a fight?

“I will use every tool in my toolbox,” she recently vowed as she is against the federal government’s recent approval of a nuclear waste storage site in southeastern New Mexico.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission woke up a political hornet’s nest in its approval of a license to Holtec International for construction and operation of an interim nuclear waste storage facility.

“I think other states need to step up. I think other solutions need to step up,” Lujan Grisham said during POLITICO’s first-ever Energy Summit. “And I’ll take it as a compliment. This is a highly scientific state … that does a lot of innovation with two of [the Energy Department’s] national labs right here. But don’t expect us to always do the heavy lifting here.”
