Kansas will keep two-person crew mandate for railroad operations

Gov. Laura Kelly said the Kansas Department of Transportation would draft a regulation requiring trains operating in Kansas to maintain two-person crews in the cab rather than drop to a one-person crew and rely more on technology for emergency braking. (Jill Hummels/Kansas Reflector)

As some railway companies make moves toward a one-person crew n the engine cab of locomotives, all in the name of saving money, it won’t happen in Kansas.

That’s because Gov. Laura Kelly is recommending the state be added to the list of states mandating railroad companies keep two-person crews.

Railroad employees and unions representing those workers argued posting one person in the cab would make operation of trains less safe reported the Kansas Reflector.
