Kansas legislators await Governor’s decision on controlling wind farm flashing lights

 

Red lights on wind turbines in Allen County flash in unison Thursday night during an overcast sky. A bill in the Kansas legislation would make these lights less intrusive by requiring light mitigation technology on new and existing wind farms.

 

All it takes for the state of Kansas to eliminate flashing red lights atop wind turbines is the signature of Gov. Laura Kelly.

The legislature passed Senate Bill 49 and sent it t o her to b e signed into law, requiring wind farm operators to use light-mitigating technology on new and existing farms.

The bill came about because many complained of the thousands of flashing red lights interrupting the night skyline. The new technology would turn off the flashing red lights except when aircraft are near reported the Topeka Capital-Journal.
