The announcement that the U.S. Energy Department plans to sell 26 million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve sent crude oil prices lower more than 1% on Tuesday.
West Texas Intermediate crude for March delivery dropped $1.08 a barrel to $79.06 on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Global benchmark Brent crude for April delivery declined by $1.03 to $85.58 a barrel on ICE Futures Europe.
March natural gas rose 17 cents to $2.57 per 1,000 cubic feet.
Some Oklahoma energy stocks recorded gains in Tuesday’s trading but most were moderate increases.
