On the first day of trading for the New Year, crude oil prices and Oklahoma energy stocks tumbled in value. One energy company plunged more than 22%.
Oil prices dropped 4% and weak demand data from China and a stronger U.S. dollar were to blame.
West Texas Intermediate crude slid more than 4% or $3.33 to $76.93 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Global benchmark Brent crude dropped $3.81 or 4.4% to settle at $82.10 a barrel on ICE Futures Europe. It was the largest daily decline in more than three months.
February natural gas fell 49 cents to $3.99 per 1,000 cubic feet.
The majority of Oklahoma energy stocks recorded losses in Tuesday’s trading including Chesapeake Energy with a nearly 9% drop and Empire Petroleum suffering a 10% loss. The biggest loser for the day was Mammoth Energy which suffered a severe decline of more than 22%.
