7-inch rainfall and 100 mph wind gust in western Oklahoma

The 7-inches of rain in western Oklahoma in the past several days is still the buzz in that part of the state. It should also go a long way in easing the drought faced by western Oklahoma farmers.
State Climatologist Gary McManus explained it probably won’t be reflected on the most recent Drought Monitor report because much of the rain fell after a 7 a.m. Tuesday deadline for the information.
So McManus suggested that this week’s Drought Monitor be ignored for now.
“Stay tuned for next week’s map. It should look a LOT better. No more promises though, right?” he wrote in the Thursday morning Mesonet report.
He also noted that Hollis in southwestern Oklahoma recorded a 99 mph wind gust on May 31. The actual reading was 99.4 mph.
Might as well have called it 100 miles an hour!

“It was right at 6:45 pm as a thunderstorm struck, and it is the highest wind speed ever measured at the Hollis Mesonet site,” said McManus, adding, “That’ll put a bit of a KABOOM in your iced tea!”
