Futures in London late Wednesday night jumped as much as 3.3% when word spread that Russian President Putin ordered the implementation of a special operation to “protect” the Donbas region of Ukraine.
Before the start of the war, West Texas Intermediate crude for April delivery dropped 25 cents to $92.10 a barrel in trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Global benchmark Brent crude for May delivery slipped 20 cents and settled at $94.05 a barrel on ICE Futures Europe. Hours later, it topped the $100 mark.
Wholesale gasoline for March delivery rose 2 cents to $2.73 a gallon. March natural gas rose 12 cents to $4.62 per 1,000 cubic feet.
While oil prices slipped, most Oklahoma energy stocks recorded gains for the day including a 10% boost for Laredo Petroleum and 5% for SandRidge Energy.
