New Mexico school receives STEM tools from Devon Energy and others

Students at the Yarbro Elementary School in Lovington, New Mexico are stretching their imaginations in new and innovative ways with the opening of a science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) center thanks to help from Oklahoma energy firms.

Devon Energy, the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation and ConocoPhillips teamed up to provide Lovington students with the high-tech facility. The STEM center features tools like a 3D printer, Bee Bots and Snap Circuits, which help budding young scientists and engineers practice critical thinking skills and expand their horizons. The Ripken Foundation also facilitated virtual training for teachers.

“Being exposed to STEM education from such a young age will help set our students up for long-term success,” said Kelli Bailey, Yarbro Elementary School principal. “We are extremely grateful to Devon, the Ripken Foundation and ConocoPhillips for giving Lovington children a unique outlet for developing their technological skills.”

Shannon Johnson, senior community relations specialist for Devon, said the company is committed to bolstering educational opportunities in its operating areas.

“Witnessing students discover the magic of STEM and work together to complete complicated tasks is very special,” Johnson said. “This cutting-edge space will make a lasting impact on students and will inspire the next generation of STEM leaders.”

ConocoPhillips, which has operations in southeastern New Mexico, helped make the STEM center possible.

“We hope to inspire the next generation to develop their passion for STEM by partnering to provide educational resources in our communities,” said Stakeholder Relations Advisor Tina Tiffany. “We’re honored to be part of this initiative.”

The Ripken Foundation has installed 138 state-of-the-art centers across the country through its STEM initiative, which aims to increase the number of minority and at-risk youth pursuing higher education and careers in STEM-related fields.

Steve Salem, Ripken Foundation president and CEO, said the organization’s partnership with Devon helps bring positive experiences and new learning opportunities to young people.

“Kids get to practice lifelong skills like teamwork, respect and resilience in the STEM classroom,” Salem said. “When companies come together to support the next generation, we all reap the benefits.”

Devon and the Ripken Foundation have previously partnered in southeastern New Mexico to open 18 STEM centers.
