Hobbs firefighter named Devon hometown hero

Devon Energy’s Hometown Heroes program has honored a Hobbs, New Mexico firefighter.

Lee Haines is one of two local first responders recently honored by the program that highlights the service and sacrifice provided by emergency responders, including law enforcement officials, firefighters, EMTs and city employees.

“Lee’s resume as a firefighter, driver-engineer and paramedic is impressive, but his attitude and personality make him a hero,” said his wife, Tarra Haines. “He helps anyone at the drop of a hat, and he constantly challenges himself to improve in all areas of life.”

Haines previously served in the Army National Guard, including deployment to Afghanistan, and he served as a medic for Hobbs Police Department’s SWAT team for five years.

“Lee has a passion for service, and because of his dedication he became a paramedic, the highest level of licensure,” Hobbs Fire Department Chief Barry Young said. “He is a great asset to our department and our community as a teacher and trainer.”

Shannon Johnson, senior community relations specialist for Devon, said Haines exemplifies what it means to be a Hometown Hero.

“Our communities need emergency responders like Lee who demonstrate strength and confidence,” Johnson said.

Kevin Hartley of the Artesia Fire Department and New Mexico Mounted Patrol was also recognized with the Hometown Hero Award.

Devon Hometown Heroes are named once a quarter and must serve in an emergency response role in either Eddy County or Lea County, New Mexico.
