Interior Secretary Deb Haaland ordered her department to begin the removal of the world “squaw” from place names on federal land.
The word is considered to be highly offensive to Native Americans because of its racist-related reference to women.
Squaw is used in at least 650 place names on federal lands reported Reuters. It is not immediately known if there any such names on federal land in Oklahoma, the second highest ranking state for Indian population.
