Cheapest electrical rates in the US are in Oklahoma

Oklahoma has some of the cheapest electricity in the country according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

The state’s 2020 average cost of 7.63 cents per kilowatt hour wass 50th in the U.S., just slightly higher than the 7.51 cents per kilowatt hour by 51st ranked Louisiana.

The EIA says the highest prices are in Hawaii where the average per kilowatt hour is 27.55 cents, number one in the country. The EIA’s latest electricity price ranking was recently released showing Oklahoma, as of 2020 had total retail sales of 62,299,305 MWh.

Of surrounding states, Kansas had an average cost of 10.38 per kilowatt hour and was ranked 18th lowest in the nation.

Colorado’s average of 10.27 kWh ranked 19th lowest. The average in New Mexico was 9.33 kWh, good enough to rank 33 nationally. Texas had a per kWh cost of 8.36 cents and 43rd lowest ranking.

The average in Arkansas was 8.32 cents per kWh, 46th cheapest in the U.S. The cost in Missouri was 9.64 cents per kWh, ranking the state 29th cheapest.

ElectricRate.com figured Oklahoma’s May 2021 cost actually dropped from 9.05 cents per kWh to 8.92 cents for a monthly average bill of $80.01. The decline from May 2020 to May 2021 was 1.50%. The 8.92 cent cost, according to ElectricRate.com was slightly higher than the 2020 figure cited by EIA.
