New use for corn results in $300 million plant in Iowa

Cargill Inc. announced this week plans to build a $300 million plant in Iowa to convert corn sugars into chemical replacements to use in manufacturing spandex and biodegradable plastics.

The project will create a new use for corn and undoubtedly increased farming in Iowa, the state known for its corn production also used in ethanol manufacturing.

Reuters reported the project is actually a joint venture with Germany-based HELM.
