Lawsuit aims to force coal mine shutdown in Southern Colorado

Conservation groups in Southern Colorado have gone to court in a bid to force new water protection rules that will eventually lead to the shutdown of a coal mine west of Durango.

A lawsuit was filed this week against the federal government and the U.S. Department of Interior to stop GCC Energy from expanding its coal-mining operations in La Plata County.

The Durango Herald reported the suit targeted the GCC Energy King II mine that has been in operation since 2007.
