Small quake recorded in southern Kansas

Southern Kansas was the site of one of the latest earthquakes in the Oklahoma region this week.

A 2.9 magnitude quake was recorded Wednesday night around ten o’clock with an epicenter a few miles from Hawk, Kansas. The small community’s about 50 miles southwest of Derby, Kansas and only 47 miles from Enid, Oklahoma.

The quake’s depth, according to the US Geological Survey was about 5 miles. Earlier in the week, a 4.4 magnitude quake was recorded southeast of Enid.

State regulators in Kansas and in Oklahoma have attempted to control the use of wastewater injection wells after USGS scientists stated the quakes were caused in part by oil and gas drilling activities.
