Rig Count: Canada Add 48 New Rigs While Oklahoma Adds None

Canada led the way last week with the addition of 48 new rigs while the U.S. rig count gained a total of seven, according to the Baker Hughes rig count released on Friday.

Canada added 29 oil rigs and 23 gas rigs. Canada is up 38 rigs when compared with data from a year ago.

The U.S. rig count increased by seven to reach 665 active rigs. Overall, the U.S. is up one rig from last year’s figures.

Oklahoma’s rig count remained the same as last week with a total of 86 rigs, up three from last year’s count of 83.

Texas added three rigs last week, bringing the cumulative number of active rigs to 327. The Lone Star State is up 19 rigs since last year’s count of 308.

Louisiana added two rigs last week for a total of 50. New Mexico increased its rig count by three while Colorado gained one new rig. North Dakota reflected no gain and remains at 33 active rigs. Since last year, North Dakota has lost a total of 16 rigs from a count of 49.

The Permian basin saw an increase of three rigs for a current total of 267. This area has experienced the greatest growth in the past year, gaining 58 rigs compared to last year’s rig count of 209.

The Haynesville area was up by two rigs.

The Eagle Ford, Marcellus and Utica play areas increased rig counts by one last week.

The Granite Wash play was the biggest loser of the week with a loss of five rigs.
