In a major setback for the state of Colorado, the U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday ruled in support of the multibillion-dollar oil railroad expansion in Utah that would eventually carry oil across Colorado and to places such as Oklahoma’s Cushing Hub.
It was an 8-0 decision in support of the Uinta Basin Railway, a proposed 88-mile extension that some western Colorado counties first opposed then the state joined the fight as well. Critics contend the decision will eventually mean key environmental law projects around the country will be scaled back as a result.
In their ruling, the Supreme Court justices reversed a lower court decision and restored a critical approval from federal regulators on the Surface Transportation Board.
