Environmental activist group Greenpeace was in a North Dakota courtroom this week, arguing the $667 million verdict against it over the Dakota Access Pipeline protests in 2016 and 2017 was not based on fact.
Attorneys say the jury’s decision in Morton County, a decision announced in March, cannot stand. The jury also ruled Greenpeace had made defamatory statements about Energy Transfer, the Dallas based company that owns the pipeline and has extensive pipeline operations throughout Oklahoma.
“What the verdict in this case reflected, your honor, is the community’s desire to punish someone who was involved in the protests,” said Everett Jack, an attorney representing Greenpeace’s U.S. affiliate reported the North Dakota Monitor.
