Defiant waste disposal firm hit with emergency earthquake order in Permian Basin

Texas Railroad Commission shuts down defiant oilfield operation after West Texas earthquake

An oilfield disposal company is ordered to shut down its injection of wastewater deep underground to stop earthquakes.

Sound familiar? It’s what happened over the past several years in Oklahoma following an increase of earthquakes, ranging from weak to strong ones that caused significant damage. But in this latest case, it’s action taken by the Texas Railroad Commission following earthquakes in the Permian Basin.

The company in question, Blackbuck Resources based in Houston, was told to stop operations of a saltwater disposal well in Culberson County. Two years ago, state regulators banned the practice and this time, BlackBuck Resources was hit with an emergency order. Blackbuck challenged the ban and continued operations until a 5.4 magnitude earthquake hit the area on May 3, according to MSN.
