Large solar farm draws opponents in NE Oklahoma

One of the renewable energy projects opposed by some Oklahoma landowners is a 4,650 acre solar farm proposed near the small town of Porter, the “Peach Capital of Oklahoma.”

Wagoner County commissioners are scheduled to vote whether to approve the $335 million project at a Feb. 10 meeting. But it has its opponents among some of the landowners around Porter. They question if an Environmental Impact Study was ever conducted by NextEra and whether it will be used by county commissioners to make their decision in the coming days.

NextEra Energy Resources named the Wagoner County project the Persica Solar farm and says it will produce 247.1 megawatts of clean energy. Its Persica Solar website indicated that “Subject to local and state approvals, the project is scheduled to begin operations by December 2026.” The farm would also become one of 30 solar projects nationwide to be operated by NextEra.

The company stated an estimated 300 jobs will be created during construction and once completed, will provide “approximately $31 million* in additional revenue for Wagoner County, money that can enhance local roads, schools and services.”
