** Exxon Mobil board director Gregory Goff recently joined a newly formed Elliott Investment Management-backed company seeking to acquire control of Venezuela-owned oil refiner Citgo Petroleum. Citgo and Exxon are rivals in the motor fuels and lubrications business. Exxon is the third-largest U.S. oil refiner by capacity and Citgo is the seventh-largest.

** The Biden administration said on Monday that a final deal had been made to give an energy company a $1.52 billion loan guarantee to bring a Michigan nuclear power plant back to life.

** Constellation Energy (CEG) has signed a new deal with Microsoft (MSFT) to provide it with clean energy to satisfy the tech giant’s electricity needs for its cloud computing and AI data centers. This deal could see the reopening of the Three Mile Island nuclear plant.

** The California Assembly is holding a special session to consider the governor’s minimum inventory requirement to address price spikes like the one the state experienced in September 2023. California refiners would be required to hold a minimum amount of gasoline in reserve.

** Britain has become the first G7 country to end coal-fired power production as of Monday (September 30). It saw the closure of its last plant, Uniper’s Ratcliffe-on-Soar in England’s Midlands, ending more than 140 years of coal power in Britain.

** Singapore-flagged oil tanker EM Longevity made its final voyage almost three years ago, after more than two decades at sea. Earlier this month, ship-tracking data showed it arriving at a Chinese port, loaded with crude and ready to discharge.

** Chinese manufacturers sold the fewest electric cars in 18 months to customers across Europe, with registrations falling by nearly half in August from a year earlier.
